Radiation Safety Specialist (Contract)

Zap Energy is looking for a Radiation Safety Specialist to support our team on a contract basis. We are seeking a contractor experienced in establishing and maintaining radiation safety protocols and compliance with applicable Washington state Department of Health codes. This role will support Zap’s Radiation Safety Officer and the entire Zap team as we are building a commercially viable fusion platform.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Responsibilities
  • Support Zap Energy’s Radiation Safety Officer in protecting our people and environment and maintaining compliance with relevant licenses.
  • Develop and maintain the recordkeeping program for license compliance.
  • Perform radiation hazard evaluation, dose assessment, radiation survey, dose monitoring, and leak tests.
  • Maintain the functionality and up-to-date calibration status of the radiation detectors and dose monitoring instruments. May involve improving the existing radiation measurement systems and developing new ones when needed.
  • Assist in documentation for license compliance. 
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Previously applied knowledge of:
    • Radiation physics.
    • Principles, practices, and methods of radiation protection.
    • Laws and regulations concerning control of ionizing radiation.
  • Hands-on experience in handling radioactive materials, active and passive dose measurement instruments, and radiation detectors
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in radiation protection programs.
  • Demonstrated organization, communication, and documentation skills within a radiation safety program.
 Preferred:
  • American Academy of Health Physics Certified Health Physicist.
  • Experience working with WA state Dept of Health regulators and the relevant sections of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC).
  • Experience in Monte Carlo radiation transport codes, e.g., MCNP or PHITS.
  • Experience working in pulsed radiation fields or particle accelerators.

The estimated salary range for this position is $35/hr-$45/hr. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.  Range is published in accordance with Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.

Zap Energy is building a low-cost, compact, and scalable fusion energy platform that confines and compresses plasma without the need for expensive and complex magnetic coils. Zap’s sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch technology provides compelling fusion economics and requires orders of magnitude less capital than conventional approaches.
